More than 80 youth from all over the state will gather this Friday to kick off the first annual CAMP LIKE MAX, a camp established with the vision of Max Henderson's parents, Shane and Missi Henderson, and supporters – a vision that focuses on youth activities that build character, develop skills, offer education, and strengthen the family core.
“Max was an amazing boy, and the legacy he created in seven years is one that should be carried out,” said Missi Henderson, Max’s mother. “While his earthly departure feels terribly untimely to us, we stay focused on the truth that the timing is exactly as it was always intended. We have chosen to remember him with joy and focus on the lessons he worked hard to teach us.”
CAMP LIKE MAX runs this Friday through Sunday at the Winfield Fairgrounds. Camp activities will kick off at noon on Friday with Compassion Day. Campers and guests will enjoy a unique take on lunch, led in such a way that instills the virtue of compassion. Lunch will close with guest speaker, Kayla Olson of West Kansas, who will present her story of what the act of compassion has meant to her, followed by what we call the Compassion Olympics, including an obstacle course that pushes each camper in a way they’ve not been challenged. To cap the afternoon, a good old fashioned game of capture the flag – color blast style!
Days two and three will focus on sports, the arts and fellowship. Campers will enjoy a variety of sessions, including a leadership section that will focus on friendship, and a service-focused bible study. Other sessions for 2021 will include jewelry making, vocal performing arts, rodeo, soccer, basketball, leather work and wood working.
